Detailing his digital life this week is Allan Trotter, cost management digital lead at Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB). He bemoans battery life and highlights the importance of the Construction Playbook.
What new built environment digital innovation that you’ve seen recently really excites you?
As RLB’s cost management digital lead, I’m excited about the advancements in parametric modelling to quickly evaluate the outcome of different scenarios at early stages in the design process. In the wider built environment, 3D scanning and data capture are really exciting, especially with the advancements in virtual reality technology. This technology has become much more affordable and accessible.
What single thing would help accelerate construction’s digital adoption?
Many things need to happen to accelerate construction’s digital adoption. However, I think the recently published Construction Playbook that outlines how the public sector must procure future construction projects to further embed digital technologies within the industry to drive efficiencies will be a game-changer for our industry.
Who do you follow on social media about BIM and digital construction and why?
My role requires me to follow and keep up to date with RICS and UK BIM Framework for changes to industry standards. I also follow a large number of external software providers to keep up to date with developments and exciting new products.
What was the last app you downloaded and why?
As a health and fitness enthusiast, the last app I downloaded on my phone is a Garmin Connect app to sync my phone with a smartwatch.
What’s the tech bane of your life?
Like many, I use portable devices to give me the flexibility to be able to work and sort out life admin wherever I am. So poor battery life is my biggest tech bane. In today’s world of modern technology, battery life is one thing you would have thought would have been resolved by now.
Mac or PC/iOS or Android?
PC and my iPhone with iOS, they work well together.
Do you have any smart home features or other digital gadgets?
I recently purchased a smartwatch to help me monitor my health and fitness. I was previously a sceptic, however it’s reduced the amount of time I spend on my phone and been a really useful gadget so far.
