In the second of a short series of Q&As to mark the turning of the year, Mace head of BIM international and associate director Dr Marzia Bolpagni reveals what worked in 2024 and what needs to happen in 2025. Plus she recommends a book about AI that you need to read.
BIMplus: What’s the best thing that happened in information management and digital construction in 2024?
Dr Marzia Bolpagni: The publication of the international standard ISO 7817-1 on Level of Information Need was my highlight for 2024! The standard is now required and implemented at an international level across major programmes. This enables the definition of structured information requirements that are the foundation of effective information management processes.
“Our industry needs to be at the front end to pursue a sustainable world. In 2025, I wish to see more and more projects and programmes meeting ESG goals and act against climate change.”
What are you looking forward to professionally in 2025?
I am looking forward to the publication of the 4th edition of the BIM Handbook! As you know, it is a key reference for information management using BIM and I am honoured to have been invited as author for this new edition. You will find the latest achievements in BIM/IM and how it is integrating with other topics, such as AI and digital twins.
What does the industry need to do more (or less of) in 2025?
Our industry needs to be at the front-end to pursue a sustainable world. In 2025, I wish to see more and more projects and programmes meeting ESG goals and acting against climate change.
I invite all to add at least one sustainable goal in their 2025 performance plan and act as a role model to inspire colleagues, as well as the next generation to be the change in our industry.
Do you have any festive rituals?
It’s all about family and traditional Italian food, especially panettone and torrone. Lately, as a family, we decided not to exchange physical presents to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle, and to spend time together outdoors. I am really looking forward to that!
