Choosing a BIM postgraduate course

There is an increasing number of Universities offering postgraduate qualifications in BIM. Many are part time or distance learning and despite the academic nature most offer a hands-on, practical, applied approach to developing BIM knowledge.

BIM and Integrated Design

University of Salford

There are three options:

  • MSc (one year full-time or two years and four months part-time on campus or distance learning)
  • PgDip (eight months full-time or one year and eight months part-time on campus or distance learning)
  • PgCert (four months full-time or eight months part-time on campus or distance learning)

There is a September and January intake which alters the duration of the courses. There is also the option to study full time or part time or by distance learning.

MSc Building Information Modelling Management

Middlesex University

A distance-only work-based course which can be studied over one year full time or two years part time. It comprises twice-weekly webinars but the opportunity to share best practice at a campus summer school. The study includes work-applied practical projects, online meetings and lectures from industry leaders and business simulations.

The study programme is aligned to CPD and professional bodies’ frameworks.

MSc Building Information Modelling and Sustainability

University of South Wales

Full time one year or part time three years.

This course is ideal for those currently employed in the industry who wish to develop new skills and adapt their professional abilities in line with the government’s proposal.

The award will also highlight the importance of sustainability and how the Code for Sustainable Homes and the Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) can be utilised within BIM technologies, along with the RICS Property Life Cycle, Passivhaus, and CEEQUAL (Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Awards Scheme).

MSc Building Information Modelling

University of Liverpool (in London)

One year full-time.

This programme has been developed for students or practitioners from architecture, engineering or construction professions seeking to develop skills in the theory and practice of BIM in design and construction.

The programme is taught by Professor Arto Kiviniemi, Professor of Digital Architectural Design, an internationally leading expert who has been developing the BIM discipline both in Finland and internationally since 1996.

The teaching is primarily research led supplemented by visiting lectures, seminars and projects from leading professionals and researchers in the field.

Choose to study from one, two or all three modules in this classroom-based course. Integrated Design and Construction Management – MSc

Birmingham City University

This course has been designed to support and lead the construction industry through the implementation of Integrated Project Delivery, alongside Building Information Modelling. The course incorporates work based assignments which also includes working alongside BIM projects. The course delivery involves combined face to face and real time web based sessions to make the most efficient use of student time.

The original concept was initiated and developed by Sarah Cooke of Thomas Vale Construction plc who created an industry advisory panel that reviewed its development. Thomas Vale continue to support this course alongside Willmott Dixon Construction, Acivico (Birmingham City Council), Rider Levett Bucknall, Associated Architects and Excitech.

MSc in Construction Informatics

The Construction IT Alliance (CITA)

A fully accredited 90 ECTS programme (Level 9) by the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). This is a new and innovative course which allows the flexibility of distance learning.

There are three modules: BIM Exeuction Planning and Project Tools; Undetsanding Data Set Management and BIM; and Sustainable BIM Design and Construction. Each module is four weeks.

MSc Visualisation in Architecture and the Built Environment

Online course over three years

The course will allow students to develop a deep understanding of visualisation techniques, their implications for design, construction and collaboration, and the ways in which they will affect their discipline area and working practice in the future. The course contains hands-on experience with a range of software packages, providing a foundation upon which students can develop their ideas and project work.

Building on our expertise in a range of visualisation fields, the course contains modules dealing specifically with building information modelling (BIM1 and BIM2), design visualisation, urban visualisation, virtual collaboration and information visualisation. The course culminates in a student-led dissertation or advanced visualisation project.

MSc in Applied Building Information Modelling and Management

Part time delivered over two and half years

The programme aims to provide an educational setting in which to develop the ability to initiate and lead the process of design, construction, and life-cycle management through the medium of BIM, centred on the collaborative and multi-disciplinary building design process. It will provide experienced built environment professionals and recent Level 8 graduates with an additional skill set centred on Building Information Modelling & Management, which will enable employment as BIM professionals in building design practices and the construction industry.
