BRE is teaming up with the embassy of Estonia to launch the KODA micro house in London this week.
The house is a tiny prefabricated dwelling designed by Estonian-based design firm Kodasema to allow its residents to up sticks and move to a new location in less than a day. The 269 sq ft cube can be assembled in less than seven hours, and disassembled in four hours.
The house is constructed with factory-made components, and can be built on site without the need for foundations.
It is a recent winner of WAN Urban Challenge 2017, a global ideas competition with a focus on London’s housing crisis. It has also been one of 10 ground-breaking demonstration buildings on the BRE Innovation Park in Watford.
The house addresses extreme weather conditions by generating its own energy. It has thin, vacuum-insulated concrete walls, quadruple glazing and innovative LED lighting and architecture that maximises daylight.
It is hoped KODA will shake up the property market by providing a high-end space that can be used as a city centre home, a lakeside summer house, an office, workshop or studio or even a classroom.
